Robert A. Cire, of Cambridge, died on April 10 at Chesapeake Woods Center. He was 85.
A resident of Cambridge since 1981 and of Dorchester County since 1970, Mr. Cire was a teacher at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School for 16 years. In the early 1970s, he was the coach of the CSDHS tennis team. He retired in 1986.
Before coming to Maryland, Mr. Cire taught health, physical education, and recreation at the City University of New York and at Livingston State Teachers College in Alabama. He also served as head coach of the universities' tennis, football, basketball, and swimming teams.
Mr. Cire was born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana on March 5, 1924. He grew up in Greenville, Mississippi and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He attended Delta State College in Cleveland, Mississippi, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in education. In 1950, he earned a master's degree in education from Columbia University in New York City.
Mr. Cire is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey L. Cire; his children Barbara Cire, Frances Custis, and Allen Cire; and six grandchildren: Levi and Hannah Custis, Elizabeth Ball, and Rhiannon, Shayleigh, and Rowan Cire.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 13 at Springhill Memorial Gardens in Hebron. Arrangements were in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
