Robert S. "Tater" Meekins, 71, of Golden Hill passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born in Cambridge on July 4, 1942 and was a son of the late Robert and Ruth Todd Meekins.
He graduated from South Dorchester High School class of 1960. On October 6, 1962, he married the former Ruth Ann Phillips, who passed away on January 5, 2000. Mr. Meekins started his trade in boat building at the age 18 working with Cecil Robins and later building boats in his backyard. He was involved in the design of the May Craft and Seahawk. Mr. Meekins enjoyed fishing, crabbing and just being out on his boat. He also drove to Hoopers Island everyday to watch the sunset. Mr. Meekins loved being with family and especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters Joanne Crooks and husband Aldrick of Golden Hill and Lisa Coleman and husband Garry of Golden Hill, several grandchildren Heather Meekins, Anthony Meekins, Jr., Kyle Rubenkonig, Karissa Crooks, Aaron Crooks and Julia Crooks, great grandson Anthony Meekins III, a sister Susan Shockley and husband Carley of Fishing Creek and a brother Bruce Meekins and wife Doris of Wingate and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Meekins is preceded in death by a son Anthony "Tony" W. Meekins and a sister Barbara Rothwell.
Pallbearers will be Garry Coleman, Aldrick Crooks, Aaron Crooks, Kyle Rubenkonig, Anthony Meekins, Jr. and Billy Rothwell.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Dave Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
