Rodney P. Hurley, Sr

Rodney P. Hurley, Sr., 71 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge on Thursday, February 24, 2011. He was born in Cambridge on May 18, 1939 and was the son of the late Lofton Elwood and Mary S. Lowe Hurley.

He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1958 where he played football. On October 11, 1958 he was married to the former Elizabeth Wright. Rodney had worked for the Eastern Shore State Hospital for 32 years retiring as Maintenance Superintendent in 1994. He also worked as a cook for Dillon's and Dayton's Restaurant. Rodney had also served in the 29th Division of the MD Army National Guard. After retiring he worked as a school bus driver for Ted Bramble. Rodney was an exempt member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc., and was a Boy Scout leader for Pack 294 as well as a Little League coach. Rodney was also an avid sports parent for his children and grandchildren. He was well known for his garden and his generosity in sharing God's bounty. Rodney loved camping and traveling with family and friends. He was a member of St Paul's United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men's group. His ministry was sharing God's word by taking family and friends to the Biblical productions at Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, PA. Rodney had been in failing health for several years and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital for the past week where he passed away early Thursday morning.

Rodney leaves a legacy including his wife Beth W. Hurley of Cambridge, three children: R. Paul Hurley, Jr. and his wife Connie Hurley of Cambridge, Stephen W. Hurley and his wife Paula Hurley of Cambridge and Nancy H. Harrington and her husband Jay Harrington of Cambridge, nine grandchildren: Michael S Hurley (Lindsay), Erin H. Era (Chris), Patrick L Hurley, Paige M. Hurley, Nicole H. Hochheimer, Andrew J. Hochheimer, Todd D. Harrington (Heather), Joseph W Harrington, and R. Andrew Harrington, one great grandson Wyatt E. Harrington, four aunts, Edith Hurley, Nettie Slacum, Alice Peters and Madeline Slacum and numerous cousins. He is also survived by a special cousin who was like a brother, William "Buddy" Lowe.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Maryland Avenue in Cambridge with the Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. Interment will follow at Bucktown Churchyard. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be Todd Harrington, Joseph Harrington, Andrew Harrington, Patrick Hurley, Andrew Hochheimer, Michael Hurley and Chris Era.
