Ruth Catherine Fitzhugh Moore, 96, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at her home with her loving family by her side. She was born in Lakesville on February 15, 1920 and was a daughter of the late Charlie Fitzhugh and Elsie Insley Fitzhugh Holliday.
She attended schools in Crapo. Mrs. Moore and her husband owned and operated Moore's Grocery Store in Madison from 1951 to 1967. She married John Samuel D’arcy Moore, who passed away on February 13, 1967. In 1969, she went to work at Western Publishing and retired in 1983. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed doing ceramics, and since 1955 she wrote in her journal daily. Mrs. Moore also took a writing class with Dr. Tom Flowers. Since she was 16 years old, she has been a member of Madison United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Madison Church Organization, a Sunday School Teacher and she was one of the charter members of Madison Volunteer Fire Company.
She is survived by three children Charles Fitzhugh Moore and wife Cathy of Madison, Kitty Henry Cannon and husband Bill of Cambridge and Bonnie Bell-Christiani and husband Earl of Carroll County, eight grandchildren Tracy Moore, Cathie Rippons (Eldridge), Trisha B. Bryan ( Ron), Julie B Whitby (Rob), Laurie H. Marshall (Kevin), Mickey Henry, Jr., Chet Moore, John Stone (Summer), and 14 great grandchildren, a great- great granddaughter, two sisters Frances Bloodsworth of Cambridge and Gladys Mills of Madison and a brother Robert Holliday of Pennsylvania, several nieces and nephews. Beside her husband, Mrs. Moore is preceded in death by a granddaughter Teresa Henry, siblings Nancy Fitzhugh, Harvey Fitzhugh, Amos Fitzhugh, Susie Fitzhugh Holliday, Frank Holliday, two sons in law Mickey Henry and Edward Bell.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Henry, Jr., Chet Moore, Jason Love, Kevin Marshall, Eldridge Rippons, Rob Whitby, and Ron Bryan. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Aaron, Ricky Smith, Al Johnston, Danny Mills, Sammy Horseman, David Horseman, David Bloodsworth and David Holliday Collins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 1pm at Madison United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Kirkley, Rev. Emmanuel Johnson, Rev. Randall Blackmon, Rev. Steve Bloodsworth and Rev. David Wooten, Jr. will be officiating. Interment will follow at the churchyard. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
