Ruth Frances (Travers) Thomas

Ruth F. Thomas, 86 of Cambridge went home to be with her heavenly father on Wednesday morning March 18, 2015 at UMSMC at Dorchester. She was born in Fishing Creek on May 27, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Hansel D. Travers, Jr. and Edna Travers.

Ruth attended school in Hoopers Island.  On December 30, 1945, she married David L. Thomas, Sr.

Besides being a loving wife and mother she worked as an educational assistant for the Dorchester County School System. She also worked with Farmers and Merchants Bank, Western Printing and several crab picking houses in Dorchester County.

She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Gleaner’s Bible class.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years David L.  Thomas, Sr. of Cambridge, her children David L. Thomas, Jr. and wife Janet of Cabin Creek, Bonnie A. Long and husband Lewis Long, Jr. of Hawkeye, grandchildren Robin Lynn Olsen and husband Eric, David L. Thomas, III and wife Jessica, Kristy C. Jones and husband David, Caitlyn Thomas and Emily Thomas, great grandchildren Hailey Hurt and Savannah Hurt, sister in law Dorothy N. Travers, and Margaret Crannell and numerous nieces and nephews.  Besides her parents Ruth is preceded in death by three sisters Marie Elliott, Peggy Insley, Patsy Monte and a brother Hansel D. Travers, Jr.

Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Fitzhugh, Stanley (Buddy) Pritchett, Brian Pritchett, Danny Travers, Richard (Dickie) Warfield, Sr. and Richard Warfield, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, PA in Cambridge with Major DeRue Hoffman officiating and Rev. Sumner Jones assisting. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.  Family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
