S. Virginia Hurley, 93 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. She was born in Talbot County on July 21, 1916, and was a daughter of the late Howard Lee and Clara Elizabeth Skipper Coleman.
She attended schools in Talbot County. On June 25, 1938 she was married to William Luther Hurley, Jr. Mr. Hurley passed away on October 22, 1991. Mrs. Hurley was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Mrs. Hurley had been a Den Mother for Boy Scout Troop 294 at St. Paul's Church, and was also a Past President of the Mizpah Class at St. Paul's and she had also taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Hurley had been involved with the Flower Fair at St. Paul's for many years. She enjoyed crocheting and reading, especially reading the Bible. Mrs. Hurley had been a resident at the Mallard Bay Care Center for the past three years, and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday morning where she passed away.
Survivors include a daughter Sharon L. Shorter and her husband Luther B. Shorter of Cambridge, a son Vernon L. Hurley and his wife Teresa Hurley of Cambridge, three grandchildren Jason Shorter of Cambridge, Jenson Shorter of Secretary and Christina Brault of Cambridge, two step grandchildren Thomas R. Hurley, Jr. and Kimmeth L. Hurley. Mrs. Hurley is also survived by six great grandchildren J.J. Shorter, Eric L. Shorter, Alex D. Shorter, MaKenna E. Shorter, Rebecca C. Brault and Matthew J. Brault. She is also survived by a sister Rebecca Cheezum of Cambridge and two brothers William Coleman of Washington, D.C. and Elmer Coleman of Rockton, Illinois and several nieces. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter Virginia R. Hurley, a son W. Howard Hurley and a grandson Howard L. Hurley, two sisters Clara and Etta Bainbridge and seven brothers Earl Coleman, Howard Coleman, Charles Coleman, James Coleman, Johnny Coleman, Leonard Coleman and Carroll Coleman.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Upper Bambury Cemetery in Trappe. The family will receive friends during the hour before the service. Pallbearers will be Jason Shorter, Jenson Shorter, J.J. Shorter, Danny Shorter, Ricky Shorter and Robert Brault. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Scott Daniels, 205 Maryland Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613.
