Shirley F. McCready, 80, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014 at UMSMC at Easton. She was born on November 12, 1934 in Reid's Grove to the late James M. and Mary Sellers Cheesman.
Mrs. McCready was one of thirteen children. Shirley graduated from East New Market High School, class of 1952. She married James H. McCready on August 7, 1952. Mrs. McCready worked for the Board of Education for almost 30 years, retiring in 2002, as a teacher's aide and a special education aide. Shirley enjoyed baking cakes for birthdays and weddings, she loved tending to her garden and took great pride in her flower beds, she also loved decorating for Christmas. Mrs. McCready was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #91 Ladies Auxiliary. Shirley was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James H. McCready, two children Jim McCready, Jr. and wife Ann of Rhodesdale, Pam Abbott and husband Wylie of Elliott Island, six grandchildren Brad McCready, Dr. Robert McCready, Lauren Walker, Brittany McCready, Jason Abbott, Kristin Abbott, ten great grandchildren, four sisters Agnes Edge of Cambridge, Hilda Gemeny of East New Market, Audrey Harding of East New Market and Dorothy Ruark of Fishing Creek and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by one son Robert Bruce McCready, one granddaughter Janie Rebecca Abbott, three sisters Mary Phillips, Irene Layton and Betty Wheatley and five brothers Clarence Elwood Cheesman, James M. Cheesman, Jr., Albert Cheesman, William T. Cheesman, Sr., and Thomas Cheesman.
Pallbearers will be Jason Abbott, David Lewis, Brad McCready, Les Booze, Bobby McClain and Harold Phillips.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. with Rev. Karen R. Handy and Shirley's grandson Dr. Robert McCready officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, c/o Sherry Wood, P.O. Box 95, East New Market, MD 21631. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
