Smiles Robbins Cranor, 86, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born at Robbins on April 4, 1923 and was a daughter of the late Jacob W. and Eva Robbins Robbins.

Smiles graduated from Cambridge High School in 1941. On April 4, 1942 she married William Conrad Cranor. He passed away on May 10, 1986. She worked as a receptionist for Robbins and Robbins Building Supply Company, Home Owners Building Supply Company, the Dorchester County Board of Education and the Department of Social Services, where she retired at the age of 80. Smiles enjoyed painting, collecting and selling antiques, was a canasta card player and she attended monthly class reunions. She was a member of Bounds United Methodist Church and Zion United Methodist where she was very active in helping with soup day, PPRC committee, teaching Sunday School to the Crescent Class, the Barbara Pak Circle of the United Methodist Women and in charge of getting greeters for Sunday morning. She also was a member of the homemakers club, South Dorchester Folk Museum, AARP and served on the Board for Sandy Island Cemetery.

She is survived by a son Jacob Cranor and wife Joan of Hurlock, a daughter Eva A. Cranor Bartrum and husband Ora of Cambridge, two grandsons Nicholas C. Cranor of Salisbury and Jesse Bartrum of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Smiles is preceded in death by a son William Conrad Cranor III, three brothers Cecil Robbins, William Franklin Robbins and William Dave Robbins.

Pallbearers will be Steve Robbins, Gene Robbins, Cody Robbins, Nicholas Cranor, Cecil "Buck" Robbins, Jr. and Jesse Bartrum.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. William R. Davis and Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Sandy Island Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Zion United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
