It is with deep sadness, the family of Stephen Eric Wingate announces his passing on March 29, 2025. To know him was to love his storytelling, sense of humor and quick wit. His presence brought laughter and warmth to those around him, and his gift for weaving tales will be remembered by all who had the joy of listening.
Steve was born on September 21,1959 to William “Bill” and Joan Wingate of Hudson, the youngest of three children. He shared a special bond with his sister, Joanne Nabb and brother, Marshall Wingate. Growing up in Hudson, he embraced all the joys of being a boy from the “Neck”—crabbing with his grandfather (Elston Marshall), stirring up mischief with his brother, cousins, and friends, and making memories that would last a lifetime.
He attended Hudson School, Cambridge Junior High, Mace’s Lane Middle School, and Cambridge High School where he graduated in the class of 1977. A talented athlete, he played baseball throughout high school and was a proud member of the State Championship winning team. His love for the game, along with his dedication and team spirit, left an enduring mark on those who played alongside him.
Following high school, Steve decided to begin his career in masonry, a trade he began working in under his father’s guidance during his school years. When his father retired, Steve took over the family business, continuing a legacy of craftmanship that shaped the community. Building two homes in which his family was raised, he was an integral part of the community, contributing to the construction of many structures in Dorchester County that remain standing as a testament to his skill and dedication. His commitment to the community extended beyond his work--he served on the Dorchester County Planning Commission, contributing his time and expertise to local development.
On August 15, 1981, Steve married the love of his life, Lisa Logan and together they built a beautiful life filled with love. They raised two children Brandon Logan and Meghan Joanne. As a loving father, some of Brandon and Meghan’s most favorite memories with their dad were made fishing on the Three L’s and building the biggest snowmen together. These moments will forever be cherished.
Steve had the pleasure of welcoming a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Benjamin (Brandon), and son-in-law, Eric Stivers (Meghan) into the family, which led to another of his greatest joys in life of becoming a grandfather. He earned the beloved title of “Pop” in 2013 with the birth of Brandon and Jennifer’s first child, Tillotson “Tillor”. Rhett arrived in 2019, followed by Emilia “Emi” in 2021, filling his heart even more. Meghan and Eric welcomed Brynlee in 2024, along with two bonus grandchildren, Jacob and Kinsley, completing the family that meant everything to him. Steve embraced his role as Pop wholeheartedly, finding pure happiness in every moment spent with his grandchildren. He loved to make them laugh and take them on tractor rides.
No matter how difficult life’s challenges became, Steve always maintained a positive attitude. His resilience, unwavering optimism, and ability to find light in the darkest of times were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he helped build. He leaves behind a legacy of love, humor, hard work, positivity, and cherished moments as a husband, brother, father, grandfather, and best friend. He will forever be cherished.
The family will be having a private memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the Neck Fire Company, 945 Cooks Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Spedden United Methodist Church, c/o Diane Wagner, 5710 Green Cove Drive, Cambridge, MD 21613.
