Thomas Meade Mills of Golden Hill passed away on July 5, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was 71. He was born January 30, 1939, the youngest child of Preston and Sara (Sadie) Gore Mills.
He attended Dorchester County schools, and while at South Dorchester High School, he loved to run track. On April 17, 1982 he married the former Barbara Moore. He was a trapper, waterman, and loved all aspects of the outdoors. He skinned in the "Old Timer's" competition at the Outdoor Show for years. He loved to cook, especially the "down home cooking" of the area. He enjoyed being able to do for others, whether cooking, working in the churches, or being there for his family and friends. He was a member of Bounds United Methodist Church, but attended St John's United Methodist Church, and the churches of St. Thomas Charge. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Moore Mills of Golden Hill and three daughters Mrs. Karen Oberender of Bishops Head, Carey Bess Mills of East New Market, and Mary Shea Mills of Golden Hill. He is also survived by three grandchildren Megan Newman, Jennifer Oberender, and Zachary Oberender of Bishops Head, two sisters, Mrs. Nellie M. Flowers and Mrs. Edythe M. Thomas, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and many loyal friends. He is preceded in death by five brothers and a sister James Gilbert Mills of Golden Hill, Preston Hamilton Mills of Golden Hill, John Wilson Mills of Toddville, Mrs. Clara Wilhemina Mills Meredith of Toddville, Dewey Shriver Mills of Golden Hill and Arthur Gore Mills of Toddville.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church at Golden Hill with Rev. Gary L. Crouch officiating. Burial will follow at the adjoining churchyard. Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
