Vencil G. Akers, 91, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017 at his home. He was born in Mercer County, West Virginia on March 11, 1926 and was a son of the late Walter and Hazel Hodge Akers.
He attended Matoaka High School. After serving in the U.S. Army during WW II, stationed in Europe, he received his G.E.D. On October 7, 1946, he married the former Bertha Coffey, who passed away on November 29, 2010. Mr. Akers had a long career with Esskay Meat Company and later was employed with Airpax. He enjoyed woodworking, watching sports especially the Orioles and the Ravens. Mr. Akers was a member of the Cambridge Elks, American Legion Post 91 and Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW. A special thank you to Coastal Hospice, his caregivers and especially Connie Insley.
He is survived by a daughter Teresa Mayo and husband Chip of Wilmington, NC, grandchildren Renee Murphy and husband Tom, Rebecca Dodson and husband John, Jenna Smith and husband Jonathan, Will Mayo, Andrew Mayo, and Julie Mayo, six great grandchildren, a sister Wanda Lindner of Cambridge and a brother Kent Akers of West Virginia and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Akers is preceded in death by a son Jerry Akers and a brother Gaythel Akers.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 11 am at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Joel Beiler officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
