Vera Ruth Coughlin, 87, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in Cambridge on January 18, 1928 and was a daughter of the late George J. Hoffman, Sr. and Elsie McWilliams Hoffman.
Mrs. Coughlin graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1945. On December 31, 1946, she married Sidney E. Slacum, who passed away on June 18, 1979. She later married Thomas W. Coughlin on January 25, 1992. Mrs. Coughlin worked at A& P Grocery Store and later retired from the Dorchester County Health Department in 1990. She enjoyed traveling, flowers, feeding her birds, and her dogs. Nurturing her family was so important to her, but most of all her grandchildren who all called her Gran. Mrs. Coughlin was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, (where in October, she received her 60 year pin), Sunday school teacher and was on various committees within the church. She was also a member of the Minerva Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband Thomas W. Coughlin of Cambridge, two daughters Carol Ann Coulbourn of Cambridge, and Connie Brooks and husband Kemp of Cambridge, five grandchildren Kevin Coulbourn (Sara), Katie Douglas (Laird), Kelly Parks (Josh), Sydney Milligan ( Ronnie) and Michael Brooks, four great grandchildren Liam and Gavin Douglas and Breanna and Brooke Milligan, a brother George J. “Jimmy” Hoffman and Evangeline of Cambridge, a sister in law Yvonne Dayton (Bill), six nieces, a stepson Thomas W. Coughlin, Jr. (Cathy), two step daughters Shelly Ernest (Brad) and Sandy Johnson and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kemp Brooks, Kevin Coulbourn, Michael Brooks, Laird Douglas, Ronnie Milligan and Josh Parks.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Thomas Hurley officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613, the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, P.O.
