He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1946. Vernon served in the US Navy and served on the USS Mississippi and USS Des Moines and had been stationed in Belgium, Spain, Italy and Guantanamo Bay. He was Honorably Discharged on November 5, 1954. On December 26, 1952 he was married to the former Helen Langrall Groves. From February 1955 until March 1, 1989 he had worked for Delmarva Power and was an area foreman at the time of his retirement. As a young man, Vernon had attended Scott's Chapel at Bucktown and was a member of Milton United Methodist Church at Woolford. He later operated a dump truck and had worked in the area. Vernon enjoyed boating, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed going to NASCAR races for many years. He was a member of Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post # 7460 VFW, Lifetime Member of the Vingt Cinq Club, of Delmarva Power & Light Co., Dorchester Ruritan Club, Church Creek Vol. Fire Co. and Madison Vol. Co. He had been in failing health for several years, and had been a patient at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center for the past week when he passed away on Monday morning.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen L. Webb of Woolford, one daughter, Vicki Lewis of Woolford, three sons, Barry Groves and his wife Jeannie Groves of Cambridge, Terry Groves and his wife Dinah Groves of Woolford and Vernon M. Webb, Jr. and his wife Merry Webb of Cambridge, one sister Dorothy Travers of Cambridge, eight grandchildren Renee Masaracchia of Cambridge, Jacqueline Groves of Cambridge, Jessica Darrow and her husband Jason Darrow of Richlands, N.C., Brian Lewis of East New Market, Nicole Groves of Great Mills, MD, Zachary Webb of Cambridge, Jeremy Weber and his wife Monica Weber of Cambridge and Jason Weber and his wife Michelle Weber of Logan Utah. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren Jillian Masaracchia of Cambridge, Dylan Perry, Logan Darrow and Nina Darrow all of Richlands, NC, Justin Lewis of East New Market, Carson Weber of Cambridge and Samuel Weber of Logan, Utah.
A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Pallbearers will be Brian Lewis, Zachary Webb, Jeremy Weber, Christopher Evans, Michael Hunteman and John Russ.
