Walter Lee Travers, Sr

Walter Lee Travers, Sr., 90, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Mallard Bay Care Center. He was born in Taylors Island on October 4, 1922 and was a son of the late Margaret Breerwood Travers and William R. Travers. He was the beloved husband of the late Betty L. Hurley Travers, whom he married on November 1, 1942 and passed away on July 23, 2009.

Mr. Travers was educated in Dorchester County. He was a veteran of World War II. After returning from the war, Walter ran a grocery store named High Street Market and retired from Jim's Drive In in Cambridge, one of the last curb service restaurants in the area. Mr. Travers was very active in Dorchester County politics dating back 50 years. He had served on the Dorchester County Liquor Board, Dorchester County Democratic State Central Committee and Cambridge Police Board. He was a Dorchester County Commissioner and Cambridge City Commissioner. He was always a devoted father and in his younger years, he helped coach girls softball and was very active as an umpire for Little League and followed his son all the way through Pony League. Mr. Travers was also a Scout Leader of Troop 128 for a number of years.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW, American Legion Post 91, was the last charter member of the Cambridge Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the Cambridge Elks Lodge.

He is survived by a son Walter L. Travers, Jr. and wife Judy of East New Market and a daughter Diane (Donnie) Fitzhugh and her husband Logan of Cambridge, three grandchildren Kevin Travers, Deborah Webster and Laura Lyons, five great grandchildren Kyle, Grant and Ian Powley, Halie Davidson and Gabrielle and Joshua Travers, one great great grandchild Teagan Wolfe and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Travers had a number of extended family members and a very dear devoted family friend Gloria Cephas. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Travers is preceded in death by two brothers William Travers and John Travers and a sister Aliene Williams.

Pallbearers will be Keith Davidson, William Travers, Tommie Powley, Guy Edgar, George Windsor and Cleveland Rippons.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service.
