W. Harrison Spedden, 96, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Mallard Bay Care Center. He was born in Cambridge on December 17, 1919 and was a son of the late William and Rosa Harrison Spedden.
In 1938, Mr. Spedden achieved 100 yard run record in high school and graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1939. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945 and in 1944, Mr. Spedden was stationed in North Africa. In 1946 to 1948, he taught in Dorchester County Public Schools. From 1949 to 1953, he served in the U. S. Air Force stationed in Germany. Mr. Spedden attended Appalachian STC in Boone, NC and in 1961, he received his degree in Law from University of Maryland. In 1979, he retired from the Eastern Shore Hospital Center, where he was a therapist in the Rehabilitation Department. Mr. Spedden also was on the Cambridge Human Relations Committee and on the Cambridge Police Commission. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Baraca Class, a life member of the Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW, and a former member of the American Legion Post 91and of the Cambridge Elks.
He is survived by his sister Shirley Spedden of Cambridge and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 1 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Christina Blake officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Baraca Class, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
