William B, Jones, Sr., 89, of Salisbury, died Saturday, December 7, 2024, at his home after a brief illness. He was born July 11, 1935.
He graduated from Wicomico High School in 1953 where he enjoyed playing football. He was captain of the football team in his senior year. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August of 1954 and proudly served until 1957. He then inspected fresh fruits and vegetables for the U. S. Government. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service in 1994 after 33 years of service.
He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and working in the yard of his home which he shared with his wife, Mary Alice Jones, of 65 years.
In his younger years, he coached the Green Terrors football team at the Salvation Army and was a volunteer for the Pony and Little League Baseball in Salisbury.
He was a member of The First Baptist Church of Princess Anne, the SSgt Cohee Detachment 115 Marine Corps League and the Dorchester Devil Dogs Friends and Family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Alice, a devoted son, William B. Jones, Jr. and his wife, Kim, whom he loved like a daughter, from Cambridge, Md., and his very special granddaughter, Harley E. Jones of California; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Owens; several nieces, nephews and cousins, his extended families of Kubista and Elliott; and a special friend, Robert C. Malone, Sr.
Harley followed her grandfather’s footsteps into the United States Marine Corps where she faithfully served for 4 years. Mr. Jones’s dream was to see Harley graduate from California State University in May, 2025.
A viewing will be held Thursday, December 19, from 6-8 p.m., at the Thomas Funeral Home, 700 Locust St., Cambridge, MD. A celebration of life will be held Friday, December 20, at 12 noon, at The First Baptist Church of Princess Anne, 11793 Crisfield Lane, Princess Anne, MD, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. James DeVaughn will officiate. Interment will be Monday, December 23, at 11am at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to the Marine Corps Cohee Scholarship at Wor-Wic Community College.
