William H. Swann, “Bill”, 90 of Cambridge, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at UMSMC at Dorchester. He was born on January 16, 1934, in Wye Mills, MD in a small family home under the Wye Oak tree.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and was stationed in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1956.
On December 20, 1958, he married Rebecca Stack. He went into the insurance business and became the #1 agent in the country for Reserve Life Insurance Company for 10 consecutive years. He eventually started Swann Insurance and was still active in the business at the time of his death.
He was very active in the community serving on the Board of Directors for the Parks and Recreation Department and was a founding member of the Bank of the Eastern Shore and a member of Grace Methodist Church serving on several committees over the years. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 91 and the Cambridge Elks #1272. He was very supportive of youth sports including his sponsorship of Dorchester County Pop Warner football as well as several other youth teams. He was very proud of his Swann Insurance Men’s Modified softball team and the fact that they were state champions for 7 years.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Swann, daughter Debbie Linthicum, son Dickie Swann (Kathy) and son Donnie Swann (Sherri). He was also blessed with 7 grandchildren Erika Marino (Joe), Will Linthicum (Morgan), Carly Blue (Steven), Luke Swann (Shawna), Lindsey Webb (Zach), Gabby Bradley (Mike) and Zach Swann. He is also survived by several great grandchildren who loved him as “Pop” and a brother Melvin “Dutch” Swann. Along with his parents, Vera Schall Swann and Bradford Coleman Swann, he is preceded in death by a brother Carlton Swann and sisters Margaret Greenwood and Ruth Ann Adkins. In May of 2024, he also lost his stepson Danny Frazier to ALS.
Bill was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan. He was also a proud grandfather as well as their biggest fan at their sporting events and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. He also enjoyed many years at his Ocean City home with family and friends. He took great pride in the fact that he had become a friend of the late Mickey Mantle through Reserve Life Insurance Company.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 1pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
