William E. "Ed" Dixon, 84, of Cambridge passed away on December 20, 2013 at UMSMC at Easton. He was born in Lakesville, Maryland on November 24, 1929 to the late Sangston G. and Laura E. Wroten Dixon.
Mr. Dixon graduated from Crapo High School, class of 1947. He married the former Dolores Lloyd on April 19, 1959. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He served in the Second Armored Division "Hell on Wheels", 29th Heavy Tank Batallion. Mr. Dixon worked for the State of Maryland for 30 years. From 1953 to 1965 he was in the Tidewater Fisheries Police, now known as the DNR. In 1965 he earned his United States Coast Guard Captains license. From that date until 1974 he was Captain of the state oyster survey boat the G.F. Beaven. Then from 1974 until his retirement in 1983 he was a Field superintendent for the state oyster propagation program. He was known for being an accomplished pool player and horseshoe pitcher. He also enjoyed playing cards. In his earlier years he enjoyed playing softball and hunting deer. Ed liked old time country music and bluegrass. He enjoyed traveling with his family, and by 2006 with a cruise to Alaska, he and his wife had visited all 50 states. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family. Mr. Dixon was a member of the VFW Post 7460, the American Legion Post 91, Tall Cedars of Lebanon 115, Baltimore Boumi Shrine, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Chester River Shrine Club, Eastern Shore Shrine Club, national and local AARP, the Train Collectors Association, Second Armored Division Association, a charter member of the Eastern Shore Police Association (Camp ESPA) and the Cambridge Lodge 66 A.F. & A.M. for 49 years.
He is survived by his wife Dolores Dixon of Cambridge, a son William Allen Dixon and wife Michal of Cambridge, twin granddaughters Kate Virginia and Laura Ann, one aunt Anna Mae Wingate of Madison, a grand dog Coale, a brother-in-law Gene Lloyd and wife Patricia, a sister-in-law Carole Robinson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3551 N. Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19140.
