William Douglas Robbins of Cambridge passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 21, 2025. He was 90. Born in Cambridge on February 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Jacob William Robbins and Rose Irene (Kelley) Robbins. Besides his parents, Mr. Robbins is preceded in death by his wife Lene (LeSieur) Robbins and a brother Stephen H. Robbins. He is survived by his daughters Rose M. Asplen of Sharptown, Christine A. Greenman of Moultrie, Georgia, Laurie L. Whiston of Calais, Maine, Abigail L. Norris of Greenville, Florida, step-son Timothy R. Mostrom, Sr. of Secretary, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and a cousin Theodore “Butch” Robbins.
A graduate of Cambridge High School Class of 1953, Mr. Robbins was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended Salisbury State Teachers College and the University of Maryland where he received his undergraduate degree in business and public administration. He was later selected to attend the Federal Executive Institute at the University of Virginia. Starting as a stock room clerk for the Soil Conservation Service while attending college, he pursued a federal government career spanning over 32 years with USDA, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Coast Guard, Treasury Department, and as a USAID commissioned Foreign Service Officer assigned to Laos, Pakistan, Kenya, Thailand, Honduras, and the Gambia. In Washington he was an executive director for the Combined Federal Campaign and later worked with members of Congress in the creation of the African Development Foundation. After retiring in 1990 he returned to Cambridge but continued his overseas service as a consultant to the government for the next ten years.
Once back in Cambridge, Mr. Robbins became active in politics and community service. He was a former official of the Dorchester County Republican Central Committee and belonged to numerous civic groups and organizations having been a member of the Boards of Directors of the Cambridge Yacht Club, the Richardson Foundation, and President of the Dorchester County Historical Society. He was a life-long member of Christ Episcopal Church and had served on the Vestry and as Treasurer for a number of years.
A Holy Eucharist Burial Service will be conducted by the Rev. Susan Leight at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Maryland at 11am on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Interment will follow at the adjoining churchyard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 601 Church Street, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
