William E. Smith, 80, of Hudson passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born in Cambridge on April 18, 1937 and was a son of the late Samuel Joseph Smith and Helen Emma Collins Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1955. After high school, he and six others from Cambridge joined the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Smith served from June 22, 1955 and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1959. He was a police officer from 1964 to 1967 with the Cambridge Police Department. From 1967 to 1991, he was with the Maryland Special Police at the Eastern Shore State Hospital and from 1991 to 1999, Mr. Smith was with the State of Maryland Public Defender’s Office in Cambridge. He enjoyed boating, fishing, bowling and the Pigeon Club. Mr. Smith was a member of Beckwith United Methodist Church, and an exempt member of Cambridge Rescue Fire Company.
He is survived by his wife Betty Smith of Hudson, a son Gary Smith of Cambridge, and a daughter Melinda Smith of Eden, two grandsons Michael Gambrill, Jr. and wife Jessica of East New Market and Matthew Gambrill and fiancée Kaitlynn of Cambridge, two great grandchildren Marilynn M. Gambrill and Michaela L. Gambrill, and several nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Smith is preceded in death by two sisters Kay McCarter and Paulette Travers.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 1 pm at Spedden Seward Cemetery with Pastor Joel Beiler officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Beckwith United Methodist Church, c/o Betsy Ewing, 1623 Taylors Island Road, Woolford, MD 21677. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
