January 1, 1947 — September 25, 2017

William (Bill) M. Wroten Jr. of Cambridge, Maryland passed away on September 25, 2017 at Alaska Regional Hospital (Anchorage) with family by his side.

Bill, known as "Tugboat" to many friends, was born on January 1, 1947. He was the son of the late Sadie Rhea Wroten and William Maurice Wroten Sr. He married Linda Handley and they were together 45 years. They were fortunate to have two wonderful children, Brian Wroten (Rhodesdale, MD) and Jenny Torwick (Wasilla, AK). He thought the world of his grandchildren, Sadie, Annabel and Magnus Torwick. He cherished the times he got to spend with them.

Bill graduated from Cambridge High School in 1964. He later attended Chesapeake College.

After enlisting in the Navy in 1966, he served in Vietnam as a Navy Field Corpsman. Bill considered the men he served with and cared for his "brothers"; forever friendships were formed. Bill was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, a Combat Action Ribbon and the Honor of the Silver Rose. He was honorably discharged from the military July 1970.

Bill worked for John W. Tieder Inc, from October 1971 to June 2013, where he worked as an electrician, a control electrician, and a controls tech supervisor.

One of his passions was playing sport, including basketball, baseball, softball (fast or modified pitch), and later in life, golf. He was inducted into the Maryland Softball Hall of Fame in 2008.

After decades of ball he took up golf and LOVED it, playing everyday the conditions were right. Many new friendships were formed on the fields and fairways.

Besides his wife, children, and grandchildren, he is survived by a sister Sharon Meade and husband Elliott (Salisbury, MD); nephew John Rippons (Bonita Springs, FL) a son-in-law John Torwick (Wasilla, AK); a sister-in-law Nancy Fox and husband Harry (Easton, MD); two nieces Caroline (Richmond, VA) and Madison Fox; (Easton, MD) and many special cousins and close friends.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 1:00pm on October 21, 2017 at the Choptank River Golf and Events Center. In honor of Bill, the family ask that you dress casually and be ready to share your memories and stories.

Private interment will take place at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery on a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Baywater Animal Rescue or to a HUS research (https://atypicalhus.ning.com/page/donate-1). Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home.
