W. Keith Kahl, 57, loving son, father, grandfather and brother, went home to be with Jesus early Sunday morning, February 28, 2010 with his children by his side. Keith was born in Cambridge on April 6, 1952, and was a son of Winifred Keplinger Kahl White, and the late William C. Kahl. Keith was the stepson of the late Ulman (Buster) White.
He attended Peachblossom Elementary School where he was a member of the Safety Patrol, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1970. Keith had been a member of the Neck District Boy Scout Troop 406, and had also been on the high school lacrosse team. Upon graduation from high school he had worked for Monroe Parks as an electrician and also worked for Madewell Shops, Connelly Containers, Inc. of MD, then joined the firm of Johnson & Towers where he installed and serviced industrial generators, and also worked for Kelly Generator. Keith later worked for Coldwater Seafood in Cambridge until the plant closed. Keith, also known as "Big Daddy", was a fantastic bowler. His strengths included a great talent, ability and patience. In the mid 1970's he began coaching youth bowlers on the Saturday morning bowling league, where he continued coaching. Many young people have grown with each lesson to become responsible leaders because of his thoughts and knowledge. On April 26, 1999 he achieved the Cambridge Bowling Center's first 300 game. Keith was also an avid golfer.
Keith was a member of Souls Harbor Church of God, where he had served as leader of the Young Peoples Endeavor in his younger years. He had also sung with his mother, step-dad and brother. Keith had also been a member of the Singles Club of the Church. Keith was an avid reader, and loved working on puzzles, especially Sudoku. He was always smiling and had a generous nature, always putting others before himself. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include his mother Winifred White of Cambridge, one son and daughter in law, Kevin Kahl and Stephanie Kahl of Cambridge, one daughter and son in law Melissa LeCompte and Jody LeCompte of Church Creek, three granddaughters, Jessica LeCompte, Jenna LeCompte and Jordan LeCompte of Church Creek, one step granddaughter Leighla Brown of Cambridge. He is also survived by a brother Kerry M. Kahl and his wife Dianne Kahl of Cambridge, three nieces Kerry Ann Todd and her husband Denton Todd, Kimberly Kahl and her fiancAC.e Jon Taylor all of Cambridge and Kaitlyn Kahl and her companion Steve LaChette of Salisbury; one step brother Gregory U. White and his wife Cande of Berlin, two step sisters Susan Pete and her husband Roland Pete, Jr. of East New Market and Christine Foxwell and her husband Bill Foxwell of East New Market, one cousin Leonard E. Lednum, Jr., one great-nephew Lee Lednum, and his faithful companion, black lab Buddy. He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather, maternal grandparents Fred and Mildred Keplinger, paternal grandparents Charles and Nellie Kahl, aunt and uncle Sylvia and L.E. Lednum and several more aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. J. Edward King officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Lee Lednum, Chris LeCompte, Mike Rossy, Jr., Mike Elliott, Steve Callahan, Guy Edgar, Arvie Ruark and Roger Boggess. Honorary pallbearers will be Grady Wilson, Mike Rossy, Sr., Denny Todd, John Taylor and Leonard Lednum.
